Schools in General

The process of finding an appropriate school in the Providence area will require time, determination, and patience. The majority of schools will only communicate directly with parents or guardians; often that communication can only begin once the family is physically in Rhode Island. Therefore, ICERM staff is limited in what they can do to help other than act as advisors and guides regarding living arrangements and how they relate to school choices.

Past participants have found that visiting Providence during the academic year before their ICERM program begins can be beneficial for exploring the neighborhoods they might want to live in and their related school choices. Regardless, it is important to Google-research each school yourself to understand registration deadlines and details. Links are provided below to the schools in neighborhoods closest to ICERM.

While ICERM does not endorse any specific school, we have narrowed down the list to include those in neighborhoods closest to the institute and that generally have the best academic reputation. The main school neighborhoods, in order of proximity to ICERM, are "College Hill”, “Fox Point”, “Hope/Summit”, “Smith Hill”, and “Federal Hill”. We also include information about schools in the commuting suburb of Barrington because their public schools rank highest in all of Rhode Island and the town is only a 25-minute bus or car ride from Providence.

All schools are listed by the following categories:

  • Public schools (free of charge, and bus service provided within a specific radius)
  • Charter schools (free of charge, but acceptance is via lottery and there may be a wait-list; some provide bus service.)
  • Private schools (fee-based, and some provide bus service)

U.S. schools typically place children by age into “grades” as follows:

  • Preschool can include infant care (but not always) up to 4-year-olds
  • Pre-kindergarten (PreK) is for 3-4-year-olds
  • Elementary School is for grades Kindergarten (K) through 5th grade (ages 5-10)
  • Middle School is for grades 6-8 (ages 11-13)
  • High School is for grades 9-12 (ages 14-18)

Note: some PreK and Kindergarten programs may only provide half-days.

Providence School District Public Schools (free)

The public schools your children can attend in Providence are typically determined by the neighborhood you live in and whether there are spaces available. Note: living in a specific neighborhood does not guarantee your child will get into that neighborhood’s public school – the kindergarten or grade you want may be full or may have a wait list which may not even be announced until a week or two before school starts each fall. We strongly recommend having a back-up plan.

The schools closest to ICERM are in the following neighborhoods (in order of proximity to the institute): "College Hill”, “Fox Point”, “Hope/Summit”, “Smith Hill”, and “Federal Hill”. Once you have a feel for where you want to live (and therefore what neighborhood schools may be available to you), you should check the Providence Public School’s website for placement requirements, and (if available) wait-lists. We encourage you to be persistent in trying to talk to each school’s administration directly to learn about their policies on admitting and accommodating visiting students.

If you want more personalized information about the schools themselves, we recommend you send a private message to the schools’ Parent/Teacher Organizations (PTO) which, if active, are linked below.
